Tips for Staying Healthy and Safe on the Towpath

Walking on the C&O Canal Towpath in the Georgetown can be relaxing and invigorating.  However, you are still in the city, so please be alert as you walk.  Here are some tips to keep in mind as you enjoy your walk.  And remember, you can count your miles walked anywhere!

  • Walking with others is the best way to be safe, and have more fun on your walks.
  • If you walk alone, make sure someone knows where you’re going, and when you’ll be back.
  • Don’t carry your valuables with you.
  • Carry your cell phone, but leave it off so you can enjoy the sounds of nature.
  • Wear comfortable footwear.
  • Make sure you stay hydrated—drink plenty of water before or during your walk.
  • Wear light colored or reflective clothing, and carry a small flashlight if you plan to be out at dusk.
  • In Georgetown, be alert for cars and trucks as you cross streets.
  • Some sections of the towpath have uneven pavement—watch your step.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings, and trust your instincts.  If you see something that makes you uncomfortable, turn around.
